Overview

The Providence College Theology Department and the Jewish-Catholic Theological Exchange Committee invite applications for Scholar-in-Residence in Jewish Studies and Jewish-Christian Relations for a term of one academic year beginning in the fall of 2025, with the possibility of renewal for a second year upon review (a one-semester appointment will also be considered). The Scholar-in-Residence will bring academic expertise and teaching excellence in Jewish Studies together with a commitment to interreligious dialogue and to advancing the College’s mission, particularly by affirming the dignity, freedom, and equality of each person, and by pursuing truth, discovered by faith and reason, as the basis for dialogue with others and the basis of critical engagement with the world. For the 2025-2026 academic year, we are looking especially for a candidate who can bring creative ideas to marking the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position incorporates manageable teaching, research, and service components, oriented towards furthering understanding of Jewish-Christian relations and providing opportunities for dialogue. The Scholar-in-Residence will teach or co-teach one course each semester in Jewish Studies and/or Jewish-Christian relations, will offer at least one public lecture, and collaborate with the Jewish-Catholic Theological Exchange Committee to organize campus and public events. The Scholar-in-Residence is also strongly encouraged to consider organizing some kind of campus or community outreach activity during the time of tenure (e.g. campus reading group, collaboration with a local synagogue or parish).

Education and Experience

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Jewish Studies, or a related field, with a specialization, or strong research and/or teaching interest, in some aspect of Jewish-Christian relations (e.g. theological, historical, biblical, liturgical, literary, etc.) and have a strong record of undergraduate teaching in a range of courses in Judaism. Experience coordinating academic programs and knowledge of academic networks in Jewish Studies is highly desired. While applicants at the rank of Associate, Professor, or Emeritus/a at their home institution will be given preference, those at the rank of Assistant will also be considered.
