It is with great sorrow that we learn of the death of the Most Reverend Richard John Sklba, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and Titular Bishop of Castro, who died on November 21, 2024 at the age of 89. A member since 1963, he served the association as CBA Consultor, (1973-75), CBA President (1982-83), Chair, Board of Trustees (2000-08), and member of the Nominations Committee (2009-11). He also was a regular participant in CBA's Continuing Seminar on Biblical Issues in Jewish-Christian Relations.
In his studies, Dick (as he was known to his CBA colleagues) achieved an S.T.L. from the Pontifical Gregorian University (1954-60); an S.S.L. from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome (1962-64); and an S.T.D. from the Biblicum in Rome at Angelicum, (1964-65 ). In 1963, he also studied modern Hebrew at Ulpan Etzion, Jerusalem. He also participated in several archaeological expeditions to sites in Israel.
Appointed as Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Sklba was a member of the Conference of Catholic Bishops sub-committee for Inclusive Language and chaired the sub-committee on the Review of Scripture Translations from 1991 to 2001.
