In Memoriam: Andries van Aarde

CBA mourns the passing of Professor Andries van Aarde (April 25, 1951– November 25, 2024), a member since. 1999. Prof. Van Aarde earned from the University of Praetoria three doctorates—in New Testament (1982), ancient cultural studies (2000), and Hellenistic Greek (2004)—and a Master’s degree in Semitic Languages (1978). 

Ordained as minister of religion in the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa in 1975, Prof. Van Aarde was appointed by the University of Praetoria as full-time lecturer in Old Testament Studies in 1980, associate professor in New Testament in 1985, and full professor and chair of the Department of New Testament (Theology, Section A) in 1989. 

From 1985-2023, he served as Editor-in-Chief of HTS Theological Studies and as Chief Commissioning Editor of AOSIS scholarly books since 2015. His numerous publications Fatherless in Galilee (2001) and Jesus, Paul and Matthew (2020).
