CBA WOMEN AND GENDER CONFERENCE: A VIRTUAL APPETIZER

APRIL 25, 2025 12-5:30 pm EDT

The Catholic Biblical Association is proud to announce its first Women and Gender conference this April. The purpose is to support our membership's wide variety of scholarship, methodologies, and identities. To kick off this new initiative, we will be hosting a half-day conference in April. We call it an “appetizer” because we expect it will leave us hungry for more. To that end, we plan to host a longer conference in 2026.

We will have two 2-hour sessions during the afternoon of April 25, followed by time for informal conversation and visioning.

We invite papers for the first session that explore the intersection of gender (defined broadly) and the Bible in either the ancient or modern world. Preference will be given to proposals that focus on methodology and/or Roman period texts (Jewish or Christian; canonical or non-canonical). This call is for members (including graduate members) of CBA only. Proposals for this session should be sent to Dr. Corrine Carvalho at clcarvalho@stthomas.edu.

The second session features a new initiative that extends beyond CBA but wants to  include the work of our members. LEAF (Literary, Ecological, and Feminist) is a new initiative fostering feminist and ecological approaches to biblical literature. The organizers (Rhiannon Graybill and Elaine James) welcome proposals engaging new feminist approaches to the study of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament texts, especially ones that take seriously overlapping concerns in gender and ecology (critical and/or ontological). A variety of methods and theories are welcome, including interdisciplinary perspectives. We encourage innovative presentation styles as well as proposals from scholars at all levels. Proposals will be considered for one panel (20-minute papers) and one short-form roundtable discussion (6-minute presentations). Please send these proposals to Elaine and Rhiannon (elaine.james@ptsem.edurhiannon.graybill@richmond.edu).

Proposals for either session should include the title and an abstract of no more than 300 words. Proposals are due by February 14. Please send any question you might have to Dr. Corrine Carvalho at clcarvalho@stthomas.edu
