CBA Welcomes an Unbound Book Review of
Crispin Fletcher-Louis'
The Divine Heartset:
Paul’s Philippians Christ Hymn,
Metaphysical Affections, and Civic Virtues
A part of CBA's series of free virtual events which draw together scholars from diverse fields to discuss a recent publication through reflection on specific questions.
In this Unbound Book Review, we will gather to reflect on the following questions:
1) What are the strengths and challenges of situating Philippians 2:6–11 within Greco-Roman, Platonic, and Jewish traditions to articulate a Christology of “divine desire”?
2) The Philippians 2 ‘hymn’ adopts or alludes to mythological elements to indicate Jesus’ metamorphosis that would have been obvious to Paul’s gentle readers. To what extent can we say this hymn and cultural context are foundational for Paul’s greater theology? Can interpreters extrapolate these conclusions to Paul’s other letters?
3) What is the impact of portraying Jesus Christ as the ideal civic model, both in a Greco-Roman context and in contemporary times?
After a brief introduction from Fletcher-Louis, we will welcome reflections from Emily Gathergood, Jennifer Strawbridge, and Jason Staples.
